A third protection scope is available: “Follow the post each file is attached to”. It answers the request we hear most often — keep the images in published posts public, but protect the ones in members-only posts.
Folder-level rules cannot express this, because images from public and members-only posts sit side by side in the same year/month folder. So the decision is based on the visibility of the post a file belongs to, not on its path.
- A file attached to a published post is served to everyone — exactly as it was before the plugin was active.
- A file attached to a private, draft, or password-protected post requires a login.
- A file that belongs to no post stays protected — the safe side.
- Generated image sizes follow their original, so a thumbnail is never more public than the full image.
